This Line in Time

Dreams heed no borders, the eyes need no visas. With eyes shut I walk across the line in time. All the time. —Gulzar, poet, lyricist, and film director (b. 18 Aug 1934)

You. There can be a stepping out. For the writer, there must be. Step away from. Step back. Step toward the gray-skinned mom in the supermarket line ahead of you. Step away from the person who says, “You need to…” Step out onto no determined path. Step once and again and again into the unknown gold-green light of a forest, a club pulsing with music you have never heard. Step into the being in the mirror. You think you know those eyes. You tell yourself there is nothing to learn. Shut up. And step out.
